In Greek mythology, Demetra was the goddess of the harvest, agriculture, and fertility. She is the daughter of the Titans Cronus and Rhea, and the sister of Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon. Demetra is best known for her connection to the earth and the growth of crops.
Her most famous story is about her daughter Persephone being taken by Hades to the underworld. Demetra's sadness during Persephone's absence causes winter, and her joy brings spring and summer when Persephone returns. This myth explains the changing seasons and highlights the importance of agriculture and the bond between mother and daughter.
Inspired by the nurturing and life-giving qualities of the goddess Demetra, the DEMETRA project aims to help women in rural areas get involved in agriculture and start their businesses.
It provides education and tools to help women develop the skills and mindset needed for agricultural entrepreneurship.
DEMETRA promotes more inclusive participation in agriculture. The project addressed the need for specific training and resources for vocational education and training (VET) providers, offering a curriculum, platform, and mentoring scheme tailored to women's current needs in agricultural entrepreneurship.
Target audience:
VET providers – educational institutions and other training organisations
Stakeholders such as agricultural organisations and associations, farmers and other rural actors
Women in rural areas and other individuals involved in agricultural activities
